How to Study in Italy in 2025: Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Choose Your Study Program

Before applying, explore programs directly on university websites or use the national “Find a Program” tool to compare options. Italy’s academic year typically starts in the fall (September/October) and runs until the next September, with exams often available through April of the following year.

Step 2: Verify Entry Requirements

Your eligibility depends on your current education level:

  • High school graduates → Bachelor’s (3 years) or Single-cycle (5–6 years) programs like Medicine, Architecture, Law
  • Bachelor’s degree holders → Master’s programs (2 years)

Entry requirements may include academic grades, admission tests or interviews, and proof of language proficiency (Italian or English). Foreign qualifications often require evaluation by CIMEA (Italy’s ENIC-NARIC center).

Step 3: Check If You Need a Student Visa

Non-EU students need a Type D student visa from the Italian Embassy/Consulate. EU/EFTA students don’t need a visa but must register with the local Anagrafe if staying over 3 months.

Step 6: Apply for Your Student Visa

Once you have your Letter of Eligibility, fill out the visa section on Universitaly, book an appointment at your Embassy/Consulate, and submit the required documents. Note: visa approval is at the discretion of the Embassy.

Step 7: Request Your Permit of Stay

After arriving in Italy, apply for your Permesso di Soggiorno within 8 working days. Begin at the Post Office, then finalize at the local Questura (Police Immigration Office). Check if your university offers help-desk support for this process.

Step 8: Finalize Your Enrollment

Follow your university’s instructions to complete enrollment, access student services, and join orientation activities. Congratulations— you’re now officially studying in Italy!
